Handsome
It’s been for my own protection,
Never practised self-deception,
So I know just how they see me
And they wouldn’t like to be me.
I hoped you thought just for a while
I was the one to make you smile.
They thought you’d gone out on a limb,
Said “What’s she doing out with him?”
I did my best, God knows I tried
But felt like I’d been crucified
The day you spoke the deepest cut –
“Oh yeah, man. He’s a nice guy…but”.
So if you’re bored and want away
I guess I’ll see you ‘round some day.
But please take care out in the world
Because they won’t all just be “girled”!
There will be men who’ll tell you lies
To try to get between your thighs,
And will treat you like they own you
And they’ll never, ever phone you.
Even if you never miss me
Won’t you still remember this. See
What’s behind the stylish clothing
Isn’t apathy or loathing.
Remember, though he has great pecs
Don’t base relationships on sex.
Though he might have a lovely bum
He might create a single mum.
So don’t get caught in all the buzz
‘Cause handsome is as handsome does.
