Shades of Grey

I used to live a life of many colours
With sunburst prisms sparking in my eyes.
I lived and loved in every tone imagined
And felt the shining pulse of many highs.

I never feared to step into the darkness
And hold the silky shadow to my soul.
I'd sparkle all the more within it's sable
To spite the night. I never felt so whole.

But now I fear the fire inside is dying
As though the will that feeds it slips away.
The colours of my life are slowly dimming
And seeping in their midst are shades of grey.

How can I face a life without my colours,
With monochrome the order of the day?
Where nothing's quite as bright as I remember
And everything is tinted shades of grey.

A world of pale and misty-fingered blandness
Is not a world in which I want to stay.
Where vapid wisps of love stir empty passions
And all is smothered under shades of grey.

So help me keep the vibrancy around us,
To lead our rainbows proud into the fray,
To resurrect our life of many colours
And not be cowed beneath these shades of grey.
