Tears

We all have our aspirations,
Summer love infatuations,
Hopes and dreams and miles of good intentions.
Living out our morning glories,
Dinner parties, bedtime stories.
Place our faith in cozy little pensions.

I can’t believe we’ve never learned
That all we get is all we’ve earned.
Nothing’s free and nothing lasts forever.
Let’s make it while the sun still shines,
Before our paranoia finds
It’s way into our happy little day.
Tears are never very far away.

Waiting for an invitation,
Breathless with anticipation,
Starry-eyed and losing all perspective.
When nobody ever beckons
Then our better nature reckons
Days and nights with poisonous invective.

So let us face the rising sun
And stand together, all for one,
‘Til avarice and envy tear us down.
Prepare yourself for woe and strife,
For on the battlefield of life
When we throw ourselves into the fray
Tears are never very far away.
